Prof. Jean-Pierre Wolf from the UNIGE team gave an interview on the German National Radio about laser rods. “These laser pulses are so intense that they change the characteristics of the air, they ionize the air and create an electrically charged channel, which has a diameter of only one tenth of a millimeter, but can be very long, up to 100 meters. A kind of ultra-intense Spaghetti.” Read the full interview

The European Commission gave its approval to the laser lightning rod project, funded under the Horizon2020 programme. The LLR project aims to investigate and develop a new type of lightning protection based on the use of upward lightning discharges initiated through a high-repetition rate multi-terawatt laser.
